2016 Speaker Bios:
- Derek Tresize and Marcella Torres, Vegan Muscle and Fitness
Derek Tresize and Marcella Torres are the husband and wife team of competitive bodybuilders behind Vegan Muscle and Fitness, where they have shared their training and nutrition tips, recipes and more since 2009. Owners of Richmond, Virginia’s only plant-based personal training studio, Root Force Personal Training, the pair seeks to promote a fit and active plant-powered lifestyle and shatter the perception that strength and athleticism can’t be achieved with a plant-based diet.Derek is a three-time natural bodybuilding champion and WNBF pro bodybuilder. He is also an A.C.E. Certified Personal Trainer, is certified in Plant-Based Nutrition, and holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology. Marcella is a professional meal planner, dancer, and PhD student in mathematical biology studying human metabolism. Together they have raised two thriving vegan children. Their mission: to generate as many fit vegan role models as possible to get the message across that a plant-based diet isn’t a handicap in the world of athletics – it’s an advantage!
- David Phinney, Richmond, VA Director, Factory Farming Awareness Coalition
If you loved him or missed him at Richmond’s VegFest, we have your golden opportunity to see him at the Inaugural Hampton Road VegFest this November 6th at the Festival Center in Virginia Beach! David Phinney has six years of experience working directly with animals who have been rescued from the agriculture industry. During that time, he coordinated and carried out the largest rescue of farmed animals in California’s history. Having spoken about animal agriculture through media outlets and multiple conferences, he’s looking forward to bringing an advocacy network back to his hometown, Richmond, Virginia.
- Jon Camp, National Grassroots Director, The Humane League
Jon Camp is the National Grassroots Director for The Humane League. Prior to joining THL, Jon spent 11 years traveling throughout North America, leafleting college campuses for Vegan Outreach, reaching over a million individuals at over 500 colleges and universities. In 2014, Jon was recognized for his contribution to grassroots animal advocacy by being inducted into the Animal Rights Hall of Fame. Learn more about The Humane League by clicking here.
- Mary Finelli, President and Founder, Fish Feel
Mary Finelli is the President and founder of Fish Feel, the sole organization devoted exclusively to promoting respect and protection for fishes as sentient beings. She is a long-time animal rights activist and has a B.S. in Animal Science. With a primary focus on farmed animals, Mary has worked for various animal protection organizations, including as Researcher and then Program Director for the Humane Society of the United States from 1992 to 1999. She was the Producer of Farmed Animal Watch, a weekly online news digest sponsored by numerous animal protection organizations. Mary has assisted with research for several books and co-wrote a chapter of In Defense of Animals: The Second Wave.
